Frequently Asked Questions (Answered)

What is Polyurethane?
ERKEA polyurethane products are made of an exclusively formulated, high quality rigid polyurethane foam. This man-made polymer is formed on our polyurethane production lines from a two component liquid system which is thoroughly mixed at high speed in mixing/pouring machines. Once mixed, it begins to expand within a few minutes into a rigid cellular mass with a thick surface skin. ERKEA polyurethane products are formed in moulds inside presses which exert tremendous pressure to constrain the expansion of the polyurethane foam to yield products with high density, great strength, and a smooth, thick surface finish.
Polyurethane is not polystyrene (coffee cup material) or poly vinyl chloride (PVC). It is much stronger and denser than the former and has none of the controversial chemical properties of the latter. In addition, unlike polystyrene or PVC, Erkea polyurethane products readily accept any latex or oil-based paint finish and are all supplied with a thorough coating of high quality primer.
ERKEA polyurethane products are designed for interior or exterior use.

What Is Crown Moulding?
Crown moulding is a decorative flourish that is commonly used as cornice moulding, the trim along the seam where the wall meets the ceiling. Crown moulding generally has a curved surface and adds an elegant finishing touch to a room. It is available in a variety of sizes and styles, so homeowners can use the type of moulding that suits their needs and tastes. Crown moulding is regarded as finish carpentry, meaning that it adds final touches to your home and therefore requires a more subtle touch than standard carpentry.

What is the function of Crown Moulding?
In addition to improving the overall look of your home, crown moulding can be used to highlight different parts of a room. For example, crown moulding can be used as trim around a fireplace or French doors. You can paint or stain crown moulding so that it matches other types of interior trim in a room. You can also use crown moulding as a decorative support for shelves and ledges and as an ornamental capping for cabinets and built-in furniture. In addition, crown moulding can be used to hide imperfections, such as cracks or sloppy paint jobs.

What Are the Different Types of Wall Panels?
Wall panels are decorative elements that are used to break up wall space. In interior decoration, wall panels are used to cover an existing wall to add visual appeal or disguise imperfections. Wall panels come in a variety of finishes and textures. Types of wall panels available include beardboard panels, decorative finish panels, wainscot panels, woodgrain finish panels, and plank panels, to name a few. Homeowners can choose wall panels in a finish, color, and substrate that match their home décor and suit their personal tastes. So, if you are tired of your plain walls and would like to give them some character, consider using our polyurethane panels.

Can the average home owner install polyurethane moldings him/herself without hiring a contractor?
Anyone comfortable working with wood can work with polyurethane moldings. They cut, nail, glue, and screw the same as wood.

Can ERKEA products be used outdoors?
Any polyurethane product can be used outdoors. Gypsum products are for interior use only. ERKEA polyurethane products will not rot, crack, or decay or be subject to insect damage.

On what surfaces can polyurethane products be mounted?
Products can be mounted on (new or painted) drywall, plaster, or plywood surfaces. They should not be mounted over wallpaper as the wallpaper may separate or be stained by adhesive.

Can/should screws or nails be used for reinforcement of the installation of polyurethane products?
Yes. Screw and nail holes must be pre-drilled for gypsum products. We recommend the use of standard drywall screws with gypsum products. With polyurethane products, screw and nail holes need not be pre-drilled. We recommend trim head drywall screws with polyurethane products.

Can I avoid the use of nails or screws with polyurethane products?
Any adhesive suitable for bonding wood to the surface on which you wish to mount a product can be used with ERKEA polyurethane products. If you do not use mechanical fasteners, you will need to find another means of supporting your installation while the adhesive you have chosen sets.

Can I stain ERKEA products?
ERKEA products are designed to provide the look of plaster moldings. They do not provide a wood grain and do not absorb stains. Instead of staining, you can create a wood faux finish using two wiped layers of oil glaze reduced oil-based paint. The first layer will be a light brown color. The second is a dark brown color.

Do polyurethane products have to be primed before painting?
No, but filled nail or screw holes should be primed before painting for the best results, especially if you plan to use a decorative painting technique such as glazing and wiping.

Are ERKEA polyurethane products fire rated?
Polyurethane may burn when exposed to flame, gypsum will not. It is the purchaser's responsibility to ensure that products conform to local building codes. All polyurethane ERKEA products meet the requirements of the Residential Universal Building Code for Foamed Plastic Trim.
